INDEPENDENCE, Mo. —

Shep’s Place, a sanctuary for older dogs, rescued an abandoned dog outside a Walmart in Northland.

“She was really malnourished,” said Russell Clothier, of Shep’s Place, which caters for older dogs.

The 12-year-old terrier, now named Sugar, was found dumped in a box outside a Gladstone Walmart.

“I like to think they saw she was sick and they knew they couldn’t afford to take care of her, and they left her there hoping someone one would come,” Clothier said.

Sugar was lean, dehydrated and diabetic.

“For her, it’s going to require insulin injections twice a day,” Clothier said.

Shep’s Place picked up Sugar and took her to a vet.

“She has a pretty good prognosis once she can get her blood sugar under control,” Clothier said.

“The big thing is going to be small, frequent meals,” said Dr. Rochelle Clark, of Fairview Veterinary Hospital.

Clark said they found Sugar just in time and not just because of the cold weather and the fact that she had no fur. With her condition, Clark said diabetes would have killed her in just days.

“She wouldn’t have survived. When they’re diabetic, ketoacidosis, they go down really fast,” Clark said.

“She could have, you know, quite a few more years to live,” Clothier said.

Sugar is now heading to a foster home for treatment until her diabetes is under control again.
