Shelter offers two weekends of in-person encounters between pets and people • Long Beach Post News

They take place on Saturday February 12 and you can attend one or both. First, enjoy speed dating (bunny dating in the Bunny Barn) at the open house on the shelter’s campus, 7700 E. Spring St., 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Then, drop by Pet Supplies Plus, 2086 N. Bellflower Blvd., Long Beach, where Adoption Waggin’ will be parked from 1-4 p.m. a latte or an artisan something.

Previous scratch posts have highlighted how LBACS gets bogged down with dogs, who are also stressed. Anything that gets a pet into a real home is a gift for him. But the current adoption process has been frustrating. People are expressing on social media and in person the need to do their due diligence online and sometimes wait long periods of time for a response. In fact, not only LBACS but almost all shelters and rescues from Orange County to Los Angeles and beyond require applications and appointments. An exception is the Feline Good Social Club, which is a shelter but operates largely as an event venue, accommodates a limited number of people at a time, and requires masks and proof of vaccination.
“Seal Beach Animal Care Center is open for adoptions for pre-approved applicants by appointment,” said shelter president Cathy Winans. “It’s not just for the safety of our employees, volunteers and the public, but because we actually believe it allows families to spend more time alone with our animals and deal with paperwork without rushing. . Even better, it makes the shelter quieter for the well-being of our animals.
According to LACS shelter manager Staycee Dains, the Los Angeles shelter only does walk-in visits on weekends and someone checks IDs and vaccinations. But Long Beach is still hiring and filling positions for its understaffed shelter, and current employees are scrambling to keep things going, including handling adoptions.
“We’re not staffed for that,” Dains said. “That’s what we’re able to do right now and what’s good for our animals. Best friends [a national organization dedicated to reaching no-kill status in all shelters nationwide] manages to support it, as do all the other national organizations.
But this Saturday, at least, you can meet your crush in person. Check out these sweethearts and let Cupid go to town!
If your dance card is full on February 12, email [email protected] or view all pets here, fill out an application for the one you like and book an appointment.

“Someone Please Chew Me Up For Being Your Love!” said Lobo. Lobo (AID #A659678) is about 5 years old and his favorite activity is playing. Balls, stuffed animals, rubber toys, he loves them all! He has a rock-solid “sitting” response and is highly intelligent. If you’re looking for a super cute, perfect, medium-sized exercise buddy, Lobo is ready to be your best friend. Smileys Miley (ID#A656951) came to the shelter as a stray and has been at the shelter since May! This 3-year-old is really, really ready to get out there and live the life a dog is meant to live. She loves her treats and she knows a few commands, especially “sit”. Miley is a strong woman and needs a human who has patience and understanding for a dog that needs it. As you can see, she’s ready to dance with a Valentine’s Day dance partner. Could it be you? Adoptions are now by appointment only, so call 562-570-PETS or email [email protected] to meet Miley. Sweets for Valentine’s Day? How about a Peanut Butter Puppy from Reese! Reese (ID # A65453) is possibly a mix of Australian Cattle Dog and Pit Bull. She’s an active girl who loves chasing toys – she’ll do it all day! After playing, she loves to climb into your lap for vigorous petting while searching for any treats you may have on you. She is also an avid lizard hunter and will try to climb trees to catch one! She can be quite exuberant on a leash at first, but walks well once she plays around a bit. Reese would do best with a confident, experienced owner with an active lifestyle. Due to his strong focus on toys and willingness to actively play, a home without young children might be best. This cute 2-year-old pittie-patootie is Totie (ID number A661600). He walks well on a leash and likes to play with toys. He behaved well with the other dogs at the shelter. He can be wary of strangers and needs a moment to realize you’re a friend, then he warms up fairly quickly. Tootie has been at the shelter since August, and after five months he is struggling with the confinement and noise of the shelter. He is an active young dog and experience with this breed is a plus.
