Over the past 18 months, many of us have welcomed a new four-legged friend to our homes as the Kennel Club has seen the number of dog owners increase by almost 8% from 2020.

But with 221 different purebred dog breeds to choose from, there is a lot of thought to be done before selecting your perfect puppy.

There’s even academic advice to seek out, with psychologist Stanley Coren’s book “The Intelligence of Dogs” categorizing breeds by instinct, obedience, and adaptability.

One dog that often appears at the top of people’s canine wishlists is the Pug – they were one of the UK’s 10 most popular dog breeds in 2020 and have a range of positive attributes that make them great. pet.

Here are 10 fun and interesting facts about the breed.

Pugs were brought from China to Europe in the 16th century and were popularized in Western Europe by the House of Orange in the Netherlands.

Pugs became even more popular in Britain in the 19th century when Queen Victoria developed a passion for pugs which she passed on to other members of the royal family.

Pugs weren’t always the way they look today. 18th century paintings of pugs show animals with leaner bodies and longer legs. It is only recently that the more compact dog has become popular.

Pugs have a fairly long average lifespan compared to other breeds – around 12 to 15 years. The fourth oldest dog on record was a pug called Snookie, who died in South Africa in 2018 aged 27 and 284 days.
