Port Alberni Animal Rescues feel the love on Betty White’s birthday – Port Alberni Valley News
Animal shelters and rescue organizations in Port Alberni are feeling the love after members of the community came together to raise money in honor of the late actress Betty White.
White died on Dec. 31, 2021, just weeks shy of turning 100. The actor was a television mainstay for more than 60 years and in the days following his death, images of the former Golden Girl star hugging puppies have spread across the internet as the #BettyWhiteChallenge escalated. is firmly established.
Fans of the late actress were encouraged to choose a local animal shelter and donate $5 in her name on Jan. 17 to recognize what would have been her 100th birthday.
Several Port Alberni organizations participated in the challenge. Bosley’s in Port Alberni partnered with Ziggy’s Rescue, a local dog shelter, and raised “just under” $345 from people who donated to the fund. Ziggy’s Rescue later posted on Facebook that the organization had received $425 in donations.
“I know she looked on yesterday beaming with pride for her fellow human beings,” Ziggy’s Rescue said.
Valley Cats – Alberni Cat Rescue received $1,579 in donations through an online fundraiser.
“We are so grateful to our community for coming together in such a meaningful way,” the organization later posted on Facebook.
The local Alberni-Clayoquot SPCA branch raised approximately $830 in donations for the Betty White Challenge, while provincially, the BC SPCA raised over $400,000 in one day. .
“This incredible tribute to Betty White will make a huge difference for animals,” the organization said on its Facebook page.
In the wake of that love, the BC SPCA plans to honor him in a special way.
“We reached out to Betty’s team to let her know what an incredible impact she has had on the animals of BC. They were thrilled and knew she would be too. We also asked if we could make a shirt Special Limited Edition Betty… and they said yes!
