Owner of dog dragged for refusing to leash ‘incredibly well-behaved’ retriever
Commentators have roasted an anonymous dog owner after revealing they refuse to let their golden retriever go even after neighbors have asked.
The original poster (OP), known as u/Impressive_PP, posted about the situation to Reddit’s popular “Am I The A**hole” forum where it received nearly 5,000 upvotes and 2,500 comments. The position can be found here.
It is illegal in many states across the country to have a dog on a leash in public parks or areas, including sidewalks and neighborhoods, due to potential health and safety risks.
An article published in the National Library of Medicine revealed that off-leash dogs pose health risks, including zoonotic infections, bites, potential aggressive behavior, as well as other infections that can be transmitted to humans.
Another common concern with off-leash dogs is the potential for attacks on humans or other nearby animals.
LiveScience reports that approximately five million cases of dog bites are recorded each year in the United States, and the majority of cases involve strangers. Sometimes dogs attack their owners or other people they know well.
In the post titled “AITAH for telling a neighborhood runner that I won’t be leashing my dog?” the PO said they live in “countryside suburbs” since their brand new neighborhood is surrounded by farmland.
“We have a golden who is incredibly well trained and doesn’t walk more than a meter in front of or beside us,” the post read.
Recently, on a walk, a man started running towards them before stopping a few meters away and asking them to keep their dogs on a leash.
“We said ‘No thanks,'” the post read. “He said ‘What if I was afraid of dogs! What if I was allergic!?” I said, “Well, you shouldn’t run into a raging dog.”
The OP said the man didn’t like the answer, but they explained to him that they were “basically out in the country” and that the dog is trained to be off-leash.
“It’s very clear that he would never hurt anyone because he’s a stranger raising his voice and our dog didn’t react at all…sitting next to us,” the post read.
The man then told OP they must be having a bad day, but OP replied “not at all” and said they wouldn’t put their dog on a leash and the man was “not getting [his] way.”
The man then threatened to call the Home Owners Association (HOA) as the PO laughed and told him to take his picture and ‘while he’s at it’ to get his address.
More than 2,400 users commented on the post, with many blaming the dog’s owner for being “an asshole”.
“YTA. Leave your dog unless you’re in a designated off-leash area,” one user with 18,500 upvotes commented. “Honestly, I don’t understand people like you. What weird ego trip do you get by letting your dog off the leash? If your dog won’t stray more than three feet from you, how can a leash she harm something? Stop finding the irresponsible weird hills where to die, life is short.”
“‘We’re basically in the countryside,’ they say as they walk around,” another commented. “Leave your fucking dog. Hard YTA.”
“You are the worst kind of dog owner. Always keep your dog on a leash unless it’s a raging area,” another commented. “You don’t know if a person has PTSD from a dog attack, if they have an aggressive/reactive dog, or if they just don’t want to be approached by a potentially deadly animal (which is what dogs are). LEASH YOU EFFING DOG.”
“YTA. Get ready to get roasted by everyone on this subreddit,” another commented. “No matter how well trained your dog is, your dog is still an animal and can be unpredictable. Don’t take any chances. Leave your fucking dog.”
“As a runner myself, you disgust me. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve run around my neighborhood and been chased by a dog, while the owner said something like ‘oh don’t don’t worry, he won it doesn’t hurt you!” another commented. “No. Leave your dog or put him in a fenced yard.”
