TULSA, Oklahoma – The Oklahoma Alliance for Animals is hosting a free DAPP dog vaccination clinic in northern Tulsa next week to help prevent the spread of distemper and parvovirus.

Cases of canine distemper ended up closing the Tulsa animal shelter in early November.

Distemper has also been seen across Tulsa in dogs in the community. Distemper is highly contagious and can be fatal in unvaccinated dogs and puppies.

Veterinarians recommend that all dogs, regardless of age, should be vaccinated against distemper and parvovirus annually.

Vaccines will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. OAA will have 400 vaccines to distribute at the clinic. No personal or pet information will be collected.

The clinic is a drive-in style event to limit exposure to other people and dogs. Cars and those walking will be directed to a vaccination station.

OAA officials ask you:

  • Not bring any sick dog
  • Not bringing aggressive dogs towards other dogs or people
  • Not bring all dogs under 6 weeks old
  • To do bring a secure collar or harness and leash

DAPP is only offered for the canine vaccine. No feline vaccine is currently available.

Erin Shackelford, Executive Director of OAA, encourages dog owners to come to the event and get their dogs vaccinated by saying:

“Distemper is a terrible virus that is easily spread by dogs of all ages, although puppies are usually the most affected. Rescuers who picked up dogs from the Tulsa Animal Shelter saw firsthand how devastating the virus can be, especially when it progresses neurologically. However, there is the good news: It is almost completely preventable with a DAPP vaccine. The OAA wants to help reduce the spread in the community and increase the prevalence of fully vaccinated dogs in Tulsa by offering this free distemper / parvo vaccination clinic.

The clinic is supported by Dr. Carolyn Cash of Alta Vista Animal Hospital, Tulsa Animal Protection and Tulsa SPCA.

Any pet owner interested in having their dog vaccinated with the DAPP vaccine can do so on Monday, December 20, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The clinic takes place at Chamberlain Park located at 4940 N. Frankfort Ave. in Tulsa.
