There will be plenty of fun for the four-legged family members at a Saturday fundraiser at Mammoth Park.

Organizer Sarah Opalinski said dog activities will be mixed with community resources at Paws for Prevention Walk at Mt. Pleasant Township Park. Proceeds will go to the Council on Substance Abuse and Youth, which aims to prevent drug and alcohol use among young people.

“They can bond with their dog, meet other dog lovers, get out in the sun and learn ways to prevent underage drinking,” said Opalinski, community mobilizer for the council and health and safety specialist. prevention at the Westmoreland Drug and Alcohol Commission.

For the second year of the event, it will take place in pavilions 11, 12 and 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. New this year are pet first aid demonstrations with Rodney Little of Youngwood Top Dog Services; a dog spray tank; a photo booth; and canine contests for best and worst hair, the dog that looks most like its owner, and its sweetest elder. Opalinski said there were quite a few dogs and owners at last year’s event.

“It was awesome, people were really excited about it,” she said.

A few food trucks will be on site and raffles, prizes and a nail and rabies clinic are planned. There will be approximately 30 participating vendors, ranging from animal rescues to social service agencies.

“We want to … educate the public about preventing underage drinking and drug addiction,” Opalinski said.

The council, overseen by the Westmoreland Drug and Alcohol Commission, received a federal Drug-Free Communities Grant and focuses its efforts on Mount Pleasant. Certain items aimed at prevention — such as signage or additional lighting in public spaces — are not permitted ways to spend grant funding, she said. Donations could be used for these items.

Pre-register online for $18. Admission to the event will be $20. Registration includes a t-shirt, bandana, water bowl, treats, and raffle ticket.
