It’s BIG News! a whale spotted off Asbury Park, New Jersey!

Well this is a “whale from a fairy tale” lol and who knows maybe they “thought” they saw a whale but reports on social media with OC Scanner Newspeople say they saw a whale off the coast of Asbury Park, right here on the Jersey Shore. It is not a total surprise, but less common for us to see these sightings near the beach. The whale was reportedly sighted on Sunday. (FYI this is just a humpback whale stock photo, we did not have a photo of the actual whale spotted off Asbury Park, however these are my photos of dolphins on a whale watching cruise here in Jersey).

There isn’t much to do, but it’s cool to think that whales might be swimming near us here on the Jersey Shore. I would love to get my camera out and take pictures of a Jersey whale. I’ve been on whale watching cruises but we didn’t encounter any whales, just lots of dolphins – well worth the trip ….. they were fun to photograph.

So whether or not it was a whale off Asbury Park, that’s a cool story and I guess yes, it was indeed a jersey whale. According to Google, the most common whale seen on the Jersey coast is the Megaptera Novaeangliae ….. or more commonly known as the humpback whale. Usually, the humpback whale is sighted in Jersey waters in the spring, summer and fall.

Humpback whales are about the size of a school bus. Females are larger than males. Humpback whales are known for their melodic and haunting songs at sea.

So did YOU see a humpback whale today? If you did, it might be the same whale spotted off Asbury Park. Double the points if you spotted a whale and Bruce in Asbury today lol
