A lot of us decided to welcome new puppies into our homes last year – according to Kennel Club the number of dog owners has climbed nearly eight percent – and demand for four-legged friends after the lockdown remains high.

There is a huge selection of 221 different purebred dog breeds to choose from, as well as plenty of crossbreeds, so there is a lot of thought to be done before selecting the latest addition to your family.

But even when you have chosen a type of dog, there is still the delicate task of choosing a name.

If you’re having trouble, pet insurance experts Direct budget have researched the most popular dog names in over 100 countries – from Denmark to Costa Rica – and created the ultimate multinational list of nicknames for your dog.

Here are their 10 best male names for dogs.

Max is the most popular name for a male puppy on the planet. Abbreviation of Maximilian, it simply means “the greatest”.

The global finalist for male dog names is Charlie. Short form of the name Charles, it means “free man” (or dog).

The Bronze Medal for Best Male Dog Names goes to Buddy. It comes from the English nickname which means friend, or perhaps from the Gaelic word “bhodaich” which means “old man”.

Fourth on the list is Rocky, which may be due to the enduring popularity of the boxing film series of the same name starring Sylvester Stallone. It comes from the Italian “Rocco”, which means “rest”.
