Many of us have decided to welcome new puppies into our homes over the past two years – Kennel Club figures show dog ownership soared nearly eight per cent when the pandemic hit and that post-lockdown demand for four-legged friends remains high.

There are 221 different purebred dog breeds to choose from, as well as plenty of crossbreeds, so there’s a lot of thought to go into before selecting the latest addition to your family.

Of course, dogs don’t just make great pets, they also do a whole range of jobs, including law enforcement.

The perfect police dog is intelligent, dedicated, hardworking, and able to understand and act quickly and efficiently.

In fact, they have a range of attributes that also make them a positive addition to any family home – as well as a police station.

Here are the 10 dog breeds that make the best police dogs.

The German Shepherd is what most people consider the perfect police dog. From chasing suspects to detecting drugs, this breed is excellent for all types of law enforcement duties.

Often mistaken for a German Shepherd, the Belgian Malinois is slightly smaller and faster than its close cousin. It is the second most popular breed of police dog, sure to catch the fastest criminal and particularly adept at detecting explosives.

Boxers are a particularly popular breed of police dog in continental Europe, especially Germany. They have a history of working in the military as guard, patrol and messenger dogs during both World Wars. With the perfect blend of intelligence, loyalty, and a desire to please, they are many officers’ best friends.

K-9 officers don’t get any friendlier than the adorable Labrador Retriever. Originally bred to detect birds shot on hunting expeditions, they now make excellent drug and bomb detection agents. They are especially popular with police forces in the United States.
