When preparing to bring home a new addition, many pet owners scour the web for videos and blogs that will prepare them for what lies ahead. What they don’t realize is that they’re missing an entire category of resources – podcasts! There are plenty of podcasts dedicated to helping pet parents navigate this exciting new stage of life. We’ve put together five podcasts, hosted by both trained professionals and experienced pet parents, that focus on different areas of pet parenting.

Dr. Dunbar’s iWoofs Podcasts

The iWoofs Dr. Dunbar Podcasts are hosted by Dr. Ian Dunbar, a veterinarian who founded the Association of Professional Dog Trainers – the largest association of dog trainers in the world. The episodes cover a wide variety of topics that new pet parents will benefit from learning more about, with an emphasis on science-based training and socialization methods. While each episode has something important to offer, we recommend starting with the episodes about what to expect on your pup’s first day and night at home, as well as some house training. error-free, so you know you’re reinforcing good behaviors from day one.

You can listen to Dr. Dunbar’s iWoofs podcasts at Apple podcast.

The Dogist: Talking Dogs

You may be familiar with the popular Instagram account, The Dogist, but did you know that the team behind the account also has a podcast? Each week, hosts Isabel, Elias and Kate – and the occasional special guest – get together for informal discussions on important topics such as dog park etiquette or traveling with your dog. Although there is a lot of educational content in these episodes, the team does a great job of keeping it light and entertaining.

Pet parents, oversharing by freshpet

In addition to educational podcasts, it can also be helpful to prepare for your new arrival by simply listening to others talk about their experience as a pet parent. Best friends Kaity Reagle and Andrea Shapiro dive into all aspects of pet parenting, from awkward stories and catastrophic failures to mellow feel-good moments of redemption. Each episode will give you a behind-the-scenes look at real life with a pet so you can prepare for anything you might encounter, especially at the start with your new addition.

You can listen to the first season of Pet parents, oversharing on Spotify, and season two on Apple podcast.

Although learning is a lifelong process, part of being a responsible pet parent is acquiring as much knowledge as possible before your new addition arrives. We hope these podcasts will be both a helpful resource and a source of entertainment as you navigate pet parenting.
