Dog blamed for biting neighbors, mutilating cat in Jacksonville neighborhood
Residents of a Jacksonville neighborhood told News4Jax they feared leaving their homes following dog attacks that appear to involve the same dog.
Residents asked not to be identified for fear of reprisal from the dog’s owner. They said he had recently moved to Jacksonville from out of state.
The first man told News4Jax that he and his daughter were at their home on Hidden Lakes Drive when a large white dog that looked like a wolf showed up on the patio.
“I went out to see if everything was okay. We’ve seen stray animals go by before, and I normally check them out and see who they belong to, ”the man said.
He said the dog had approached him and that everything was fine until he turned to see his daughter who was standing a few feet away.
“The next thing I know is he came in and clung to my stomach. So I started to scream. I was moving and I was able to move away from it, ”he explained.
Moments later, said another neighbor, the same dog injured a woman in her yard before attacking the woman’s husband, who was running to her rescue.
“I saw the dog had a collar on, so I slowly reached out as the dog looked at me,” said the other neighbor. “He reached out and bit my stomach then bit my arm.”
The couple, the neighbor said, started screaming and the dog ran away. The woman who was attacked still has bite marks under her bandages. Her husband still has visible bites on his stomach.
A dog matching this same description later showed up in a front yard on Compass Rose Drive where 7-year-old cat Zeke was sitting. Zeke’s owner says the dog mutilated his cat as she and two men tried to get the dog out of the cat.
“He freed my cat. I sent him over to me and grabbed my cat and immediately took him to the ER where he died on arrival, ”said the cat’s owner.
Zeke’s owner said she then went to the hospital after realizing her hand was injured while trying to free her cat.
That same night, a neighbor’s security camera recorded video of a dog matching the same description with a man running down an alley near where Zeke was attacked. It is not known if the man in the video is the owner of the dog.
News4Jax has learned that the dog and his owner live in a house near where the attacks took place. We tried to speak to the owner on Tuesday but he was not home.
News4Jax does not identify the owner as he has not been charged with a crime. The three neighbors said it was not clear if the dog was up to date with his rabies vaccines.
On Tuesday, the dog was allowed to stay at his home while investigators try to determine if the same dog is involved in the reported incidents. If proven, the owner could face criminal charges.
