Battle Creek Shelter calls for help after heartbreaking rescues
A local cat rescue sees its resources running out as the shelter is packed.
Companion Cats is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization made up of volunteers. Its mission is to sterilize or neuter and find suitable homes for ownerless cats, thus ending the suffering of abandoned and homeless cats living on the streets. After taking steps to cover the medical costs of two cats found in deplorable condition and arriving to find an abandoned kitten cage at the Companion Cats facility, the association is asking the community to donate, adopt and volunteer.
Many rescues have costs that far exceed the money contributed by donations and grants. Pet cats are no different. Over the past few weeks, they have stepped in to help take care of two cats found when no one else wanted or could. Sadly, despite Herculean efforts to save the two felines, they both passed away. But not until all efforts to save them are exhausted. These efforts come at a high price.
As if that weren’t enough, staff arrived at the Battle Creek Rescue Center last week to find two kittens abandoned overnight. Staff arrived and found the two cold, hungry, dirty and thirsty babies locked in a cage right outside the door.
The kittens, now named Amber and Abner, are now safe and sound. But Companion Cats needs your help to make sure Amber, Abner, and all the other felines that were previously put aside get the help they need.
The biggest need is financial. Make sure the medical needs of each of their cats are covered. Each cat and kitten adopted by Companion Cats is spayed / neutered, receives all age-appropriate vaccines, is microchipped, tested for FIV / FeLV and other necessary medical attention before leaving the rescue gates.
